The Blue Riband

A Totally Unofficial round-the-island record for OC-6s

Whereas the real Blue Riband was a meticulously timed record for passenger-carrying ships crossing the North Atlantic, this is for bragging rights only!! There is no trophy or award - BYOB

To claim a place on the table email Gralin with:
your time taken from the Haldi bridge back around to the bridge, the time and date you started and boat colour.

The "Bedford Scale"  shows a performance rating against a 52 minute lap with no current. See notes at foot of page.

What is the "Bedford Scale"?

We all know it requires more effort to paddle upstream than downstream.

And we all know that you need more effort to paddle upstream than you will save paddling downstream, for a given length of course, such as the length of the Brae Island. This is due to the fact that you spend longer going upstream being slowed by the current, than you will spend going downstream being helped by the current.

And we can all feel in our muscles that these effects are magnified by the change in the speed of the current - most noticable during the freshet.

So the "Bedford Scale" - created specifically for FLCC - uses the math of the positive and negative effect of the currents to standardise any given lap time in its actual current speed (from Avadepth) against a "Standard" time of 52 minutes with no current. This makes it possible for a team to compare two laps on different days, in different conditions.

A Bedford Scale below 100% indicates "beating the target of 52 minutes".
