RED HOT CHILI PADDLERS TAKE CHAMPIONSHIP AT CKBC YOUTH REGATTA, BURNABY LAKE, May 28th, 2016
Introduction to Racing
Races are normally 500 m and normally 3 heats per regatta
Each team has 20 paddlers, a steersperson, a drummer, plus a few spares.
Teams are mixed, womens or mens (regattas vary in definition)
Each team should select: manager, captain, treasurer, secretary, fundraising committee and FLCC representative
Teams must have a minimum number of paddlers and a qualified steersperson in the boat to use the club dragon boat for a practice
FLCC has paddles and pfds for new paddlers but members are expected to get their own
All DB team members must be FLCC club members (Jan 1– Dec 31) and may enjoy the other benefits of being a club member (social, recreational, re-enactments)
Boat usage paid by team to FLCC based on number of practices per week – Practice schedule determined at beginning of DB season (April – September)
$600 plus $30 GST = $630 for the season to book 1 practice per week
$1200 plus $60 GST = $1260 for the season to book 2 practices per week
$1800 plus $90 GST = $1890 for the season to book 3 practices per week
Coaching, shirts, regattas (entry fees, transportation & accommodations), etc. paid by members directly or raised through fundraising
Each team has it’s own treasurer to handle the team funds.
Each team is responsible to find their own coach suited to their needs
Coach fees normally are $50 to $100 per session based on their experience and knowledge
FLCC will help team to find coaches to meet their needs
Team selects regattas to enter. They vary in size and price (entry fees of $300 to well over $1000 per team)
Team should decide at the beginning of the season which regattas their team will attend so team members can schedule to be there.
Team members pay travel costs and accommodations for out-of-town events and may do fundraising to pay for regatta expenses
For those that do not want to commit to a season of Dragonboating at this time, FLCC may offer short introduction to Dragonboating programs.
