Portland Sept 10 - 11, 2011. 2 Fort Langley teams headed south to try their luck on International waters. FLCC Sun Dragons and FLCC Dragon Alliance both participated in the Portland Dragon Boat Regatta. There were a total of 75 teams; this was comprised of 30 Women’s teams and 45 Mixed as well as a junior division. The weather was hot with no sign of a cloud or raindrop. The races got underway first thing Saturday morning. There were a total of 3 regular races on Saturday to seed each of the teams for the Sunday Semi-finals and Finals. SunDragons landed in the 2nd Division where they finished up with a Silver Medal. Dragon Alliance raced hard and fast into the third division and missed bronze by the skin of their fangs! SunDragons also qualified to enter one of the Specialty races; the Women’s Master Race which added a 4th race to their Saturday agenda. On Sunday the 11th there was a beautiful tribute to all the fallen from 9/11. The local Fireboat was on the water with a water show choreographed to a specially written song and the scene was quite touching with paddlers standing on the beach waving their paddles back and forth in the air, this was followed by a minute of silence before everything got underway again. Once the final races were run, the 2000m Bridge to Bridge races were run. This was made up of the all the Gold and Silver medal winners from both the Women’s and Mixed Divisions. There were plenty of vendors to check out and a rockin’ party at the end of Sunday in the ever popular beer garden. All in all this was a fantastic venue, and a well organized, smoothly run regatta. I would highly recommend other teams to give it a try. Stats for the Fort Langley teams are:

Penticton Dragon Boat Regatta Sept 10/11 2011 Eight FLCC teams attended this regatta – there were a total of 43 womens and 45 mixed teams allowing for separate women’s and mixed divisions for both the Saturday and Sunday races. All teams had two 500m races on Saturday and Sunday. The weather was hot and sunny and lake was calm and inviting. The regatta was run by GO Rowing and Paddling using Millenium boats. The team tents were set up on the grass in the park by Skaha Lake and the music played throughout the day with prompt announcing of race results. Loading was done off the beach with friendly and efficient volunteers getting the boats loading and unloaded so the races were running on time or even ahead of time. Many of the FLCC members had been practicing our Thriller flash mob moves which were very well received by the many other teams at the event.
