Fort Langley Canoe Club welcomes you

to our sport of paddling kayaks and canoes on the Fraser River from our base in Fort Langley.

The club offers drop-in sessions for various types of paddling, on payment of a $10 fee which covers the loan of necessary equipment and insurance. Our aims with these "drop-in" sessions are to enable you to try the activity, meet the members & determine which paddling discipline you prefer. Then, we hope you will wish to join the club, explore this website and read the monthly members' newsletter.

Here is what one new member recently wrote to us:       "My wife and I recently started paddling with a Dragon Boat team at FLCC. Like many middle aged couples our interests are usually in different directions and since my wife doesn't ask to join me for golf or I to join her for the book club or pilates this was a chance to try something together. We soon found that we were both enjoying the other like-thinking couples and singles as well as the physical component of the sport. We also found that this was not a purely social endeavor but a serious group that trained hard and had fun at the same time, exactly what we were looking for. The team has a very good coach that puts us through a tough session twice a week. We will compete in 5 regattas this season - we hear they are lots of fun, so we are looking forward to some good competition and some laughs along the way."

It is important to pre-register for all sessions as the number of spaces is limited.

Courses and Programs

FLCC operates a wide range of classes and programs for paddlers of all ages and ability, using several types of kayak, to enable a progressive development of skills.

Voyageurs

These are based on the types of boats used by the explorers and fur traders in the 19th and 20th Century. Today, their modern equivalent makes for a wonderful craft that seats up to 10 paddlers, enabling a more social style of paddling. Sessions last about an hour and a half or so and drop-ins are welcome at 9:30am Saturdays, and 5:30pm Mondays.

Members also make excursions to other locations in the Lower Mainland, such as Harrison Lake and River during the Salmon run and Stave Lake.

NB We do not normally dress up!!

Dragon Boats

DBs date back more than 6,000 years and are today raced at festivals all around the world.

FLCC hosts 12 teams (mixed, ladies or senior) that are coached throughout the summer season in Fort Langley. They compete in regattas across the Lower Mainland and Washington, USA.

Each racing team has 20 paddlers, a drummer and a steersperson. New recruits are usually accepted by teams in Spring each year.

Kayaks

FLCC provides paddlers with an opportunity to paddle for recreation or for highly-trained racing in regattas around the Lower Mainland as well as at Provincial, National and International competitions.

Some of the more experienced youths are shown here training in the winter months.

Team Spirit is an essential ingredient for racing success.

Outriggers

The traditional Polynesian canoe that was used for fishing & island-hopping has been developed into a racing machine and FLCC sports a pair of the 6-person variety.

Many members paddle OC6s throughout the year for cross-training, and the regatta-based racing is a growing part of FLCC.

Drop-in sessions are not normally available, due to some additional safety training that is required for these boats, but

We recommend:

A waterproof layer

A warm layer (or two)

Comfortable pants or shorts that do not absorb a lot of water.

Water shoes or sandals.

A hat and sunscreen is always a good idea.

A dry change of clothes or a sweat shirt is nice for your ride home.

Day camp participants should always bring a complete change of clothes - as well as a drink & snack or two.
