The making of a multi-discipline Canoe Club



1994 – FLCC becomes a registered society.
Started by Colin Chappell whose children competed in high level kayak racing out of the False Creek RCC. 
Other members were recreational paddlers

1994 - summer programs start in Bedford –with university student coaches

1996 - First Cranberry Race - boats raced from Chilliwack to Fort Langley 

1997 - BC Summer Games in Burnaby /Delta – 4 athletes succeed from FL.            
First Cranberry regatta in Bedford Channel –community teams only

1998 - National Canoe Championships in Whistler
Sprint regatta in Bedford Channel attracts 7 clubs            
BC Summer Games in Maple Ridge – 6 athletes from FL            
First Paddlers Classic May regatta in Bedford Channel            
Kayak winter paddling in House of Concord pool using SFU boats

1999 – 3 FW paddlers on Team BC to western Canada Games               
20 paddlers to BC Bantam Championships

2000 - Cranberry Lady donated to the Club

2001 – Senior athletes join rowing in the official opening of FL Rowing Club            
Gain access to green boathouse                       

2002 -   Flatwater hires coach for Sprint program            
Voyageur program starts - team goes to Day of the Longboat            
Walnut Grove High School Edge voyageur one day annual outing starts

2003 – Team BC trials on Bedford Channel – 4 FLCC paddlers make TeamBC            
Had entry level K1s built for the club                 
FLCC Webpage developed       

2004 – One DB team formed hiring coach and renting DB weekly from False Creek

2005 - Purchase first DB for the Club with substantial members fundraising – four DB teams in club            
FLCC – three athletes do well at Canada Summer Games            
FW start using old sawmill building for storage and rowers paddlesport dock            
Purchase container for storage

2006 – First FL athlete to represent Canada at Pan Am Canoe Championships            
Six dragonboat teams in club            
First outrigger canoe (OC6) in club – used mainly by DBers for cross training
FLCC involved with ToL waterfront development

2007 - FLCC has 3 athletes on Team BC for Western Canada Summer Games            
Seven Dragon boat teams in club

2008 – Opening of new floating boathouse and ToL docks            
Nine DB teams in club            
Second outrigger canoe in (OC6) club
Re-enactment of Simon Fraser's voyage from Fort St James to Vancouver

2009 – Eleven dragon boat teams
Purchase third dragon boat
Canoe Docks replace old Bedford docks for big boats            
1 FW athlete competes in Canada Games
Senior Ladies DB Team wins GOLD at BC Senior Games
Senior Mixed DB Team wins Silver at Alcan Festival
Power For All program launched for paddlers with disabilities
350 club members
