How to use AVADEPTH

Avadepth is the water velocity and depth prediction tool provided by Fisheries and Oceans Canada.

1. Click AVADEPTH to open the site in another window.

In my Firefox browser, it looks like this:

2. Log in, using User ID: flccweb and Password: tides

It will look like

3. Select Predicted Water Levels, to see

4. Select your chosen date

5. Pick the radio button for MAIN ARM

6. Pick the radio button for Velocities. Click Display

The column that we use is headed 64 (as we are 64km upstream of the datum point). In this example, a fairly even flow of between 0.7 and 1.0 metres per second is predicted throughout the day shown.

The normal maximum speed is about 1.6 metres per second.

A negative number would mean the current is flowing upstream, due to a rising tide.

During the low water months, when the speed of water is not so important, use the Water Levels feature to understand the dangers of low water.
